NYC Art Movement 2020

From BLM to Covid.

Cover of NYC Art Group 2020

I spent a couple of months walking through New York City taking photos of various mural arts. During the COVID pandemic, when every street echoed silence, I walked around the city as a lone traveler from another time and place.

These images are a small part of the street-art expression where artists painted on the boards put up to protect their businesses from looters, and the Black Lives Matter movements which engulfed the city with a powerful sweep against injustice. Within the confines of limiting ways of self-expression, artists boiled their energy by using their creative expressionism, these boards as their canvases. Regardless of backgrounds or beliefs, these expressions became "mural arts," from simple doodle-like marks to more rich and vibrant one-of-a-kind art.

In this book I chose photos from over 1,000 images which I felt strongly depict those months. As a filmmaker I am currently making a documentary as well. It is my sincere hope that these photos will strike at the core of strange, dark times, as well as allow your hearts to reveal and understand the meaning behind this expressionism through new artistic expression.

These artists were inspired purely from their soul, expressing their own frustrations and aggression through explosive energy to tell their stories on the mural space. I believe that 2020 has been a year where we saw fear, shut-downs and confinement, but I feel that the human spirit will never lose its sense of hope for the future. It is my hope that this book will provide artistic movement within you.
